The DeMiNeS Network “German Mediterranean Network for Linguistics” („Deutsch-Mittelmeerisches Netzwerk Sprachwissenschaft”) (2017 Humboldt Alumni Award for Innovative Networking Initiatives to Athina Sioupi) with support from Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, in cooperation with the Research Unit on (Experimental) Syntax and Heritage Languages at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Artemis Alexiadou) and the Center "Language, Variation, and Migration" at the University of Potsdam, will organize a one-day workshop on “Language Comparison and Typology: German and the Mediterranean Languages”. The Workshop will be hosted by the Humboldt University Berlin (Department of English and American Studies).
The focus of the workshop is led on contributions from a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches on German and/or the Mediterranean languages.
The general aim is to bring together researchers interested in contributing to deeper and more systematic descriptions and theoretical modeling of empirically oriented comparative and typological studies on morphology and syntax, semantics and pragmatics, corpus linguistics, historical linguistics, language variation and language acquisition on Language Comparison and Typology of German and/or the Mediterranean languages.

The Workshop will bring together established and early-career scholars who are interested in topics such as:

  • NPs (bare nouns, mass nouns, cognates)
  • V2 and Word Order Variation
  • Formulaic Language
  • Psych Verbs
  • Space and Time

This is not an exhaustive list; Submissions do not need to be limited to the above topics.

The program will include a poster session for PhD students and post-doc researchers who are working on or have completed a thesis on German and/or Mediterranean languages.
Submissions are limited to one poster per author. Posters should follow a common format of A0 (ca. 84 x 120 cm) and must have portrait orientation.
Conference languages are English and German.

Focus: The research network DeMiNeS („Deutsch-Mittelmeerisches Netzwerk Sprachwissenschaft”) funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (2017 Humboldt Alumni Award for Innovative Networking Initiatives to Athina Sioupi) in cooperation with the Research Unit on (Experimental) Syntax and Heritage Languages at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Artemis Alexiadou) is organizing a Summer School for MA and PhD students. Host of the school is the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Kalandra University Camping AUTh (Chalkidiki).
Minimum Education Level: MA

The summer school is aimed at early career researchers – MA and PhD students, and other researchers –, offering a mix of lectures, courses and workshops on various topics relevant to anyone interested in General Linguistics, Linguistic Theories, Comparative Linguistics and Typology. The summer school will offer classes on a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches on syntax, semantics and pragmatics, corpus linguistics, historical linguistics on Language Comparison and Typology of German and/or the Mediterranean languages.

The summer school offers ten courses and workshops as well as one invited lecture. The aim is to attract students and scholars, who wish to broaden their knowledge in linguistics in a relaxed yet very focused and stimulating atmosphere that promotes in depth analysis and discussion.
The languages of the summer school will be English and German.

Description: Classes will address topics of NPs, Word Order Variation, Argument Structure, Space and Polysemy in a cross-linguistic perspective.

A plenary talk will be given by Manfred Krifka (Leibniz-Zentrum Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft (ZAS) & Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin)).

Please make sure to enter a valid email-address and check your mailbox (including spam folder) regularly. On request, we will be happy to provide you with an invitation letter for visa purposes.

Deadline for abstract submission for poster is May 20, May 30, 2019. A notification of acceptance will be sent by May 31, 2019.

Accommodation:
There is one accommodation option available, including camping in a tent sharing with other students a tent (small or big for 2 persons). The cost for accommodation with breakfast, lunch and dinner for four days will be approx. between 120-180Euros. If you prefer to find your own accommodation, you can search online using various websites.  There are a full range of rooms available around and within a short distance from the summer camp.

The cost does not include health insurance for the duration of your stay (for non-EU participants; EU participants are typically covered through European Health Insurance).
You will have several options for payment including payment online.

Each participant may attend 3 of the 10 offered classes.
